I was expecting to fly into Hong
Kong and marvel at how close the plane came to the buildings : I had
heard the stories of 747s "flying down the street".
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your point of view, this
didn't happen. A new airport has been built which allows you a scare
free landing, but then subjects you to an even more scary bus ride
into town along a road which I'm sure I've seen in Gran Turismo for
the Playstation
We were told the coach couldn't
take us all the way to the hotel, as the road was too narrow. Start
worrying right now ! Our hotel was called "The Rosedale on the
Park". The description told us it sat on one edge of a beautiful
park. Well, it was almost true, apart from the fact there was another
row of buildings between us and the park. "Rosedale Almost on the
Park" would have been more appropriate. The room was pleasant
enough, just a bit small. Reminded me of Japan. The view from the
window was.....interesting

The first mistake we made was
not judging the climate. It was a good 10degrees cooler than
Singapore, so we had to brave the elements and pretend we were back in
Scotland in July!
We went for traditional Peking
duck in a real Chinese restaurant. At least we gave all the locals a
good laugh as we tried to work out what to do with the food!
The city improves at night (when
the bright lights hide the crumbling masonary and peeling paint). The
old trams are good fun, but I could imagine them to be horrible in the
heat of the summer.

To sum up, we weren't there for
long, and probably didn't know the best places to go, but even so, the
place was quite dirty : As the poster below shows (Lets Eliminate
Rats)
